Rules for attack dogs

City ordinances allow Memphians to continue owning dogs that attack or kill as long as they adhere to certain rules.

If a dog attacks someone, Memphis Animal Services will confiscate the dog and the dog can be declared dangerous or vicious.

The owner can surrender the dog and have it euthanized. If he chooses to keep the animal, the owner must post a sign on all entry points to the yard within 30 days that says "Warning Dangerous/Vicious Dog (or Animal) on Premises."

The dog must be microchipped or tattooed with an owner's identification. The owner has to maintain $50,000 in liability insurance and keep the dog in a special kennel or in the house. If the dog is ever out of those confines, it must be muzzled.

Owners can be subject to a $50 a day fine for not being in compliance.
